Hello again! I've been thinking about adding in more in-class writing to our meetings, so if there's time today, let's give this a shot, shall we?
So, today, we discussed design and design principles. I'd like you to answer a few questions before we conclude:
I'd like you to spend some time thinking about your responses to these questions and write a bit less than a paragraph about each one. You don't need to write formally in this In-Class Response, so don't worry about this being especially polished, but I would like to know more about what your thoughts were/are about design principles and how they might work in this final project. Also, just like before, if you're not in class to complete this response, that's perfectly fine. You don't need to do it outside of class, but I welcome you to respond as best as you can if you're not here for our discussion today.

Coming into class today, I knew that design was important so the overall look of your project flows well and matches the topic at hand. However, I never considered all the different components that go into design. It is interesting to see what a difference one's choice in color, font, or contrast can have on any sort of work. This knowledge will help immensely when I am working on my project 3, as know I know which components to focus on in order to make my works match the style I am trying to mimic, whether it be a poster, brochure, social media page, etc.

I knew a few of the basics regarding design principles coming into this class. I knew that for academic writing, there is a certain font that you should use and certain alignment rules. Until Project 2, i was not very experienced using sub headings but that project taught me how to correctly use them and how they separate your paper into corresponding sections. Based on our activity today I was able to learn more about color and contrast. especially what colors go together and what would be harder to read during a presentation. I have never come in contact with a project that was dependent on certain colors, but now i know that i can use complementing colors to make my projects more flashy and easier to look at. In project three I have a better idea of what colors will go well with the different elements in my project. Instead of doing certain expected color choices, i have an idea on what would be better suited for my projects. The repetition part also made me aware of keeping certain things consistent in my project and keep everything flowing nicely. This in class assignment gave me a better idea of what to keep in mind during my project three.

What I knew about design principles before class today was that I knew you should use certain fonts and colors together. Whether using a dark color and another dark color on the same page so the person being presented to wouldn’t be able to ready. Also, using certain fonts for certain projects. For example, you shouldn’t use the font Cosmic Sans for research paper, you should use something more formal like Times New Roman. I learned in class a lot about repetition, how you shouldn’t just mix around fonts and alignments all the time, try to be constant as much as possible, you can change it up but every now and then. I also learned that with alignment you want to make everything look pretty and presentable that way that every document presented looks professional, and makes you look like you know what you are doing. For Project 3, I will most likely apply the design principles of font, color, alignment, and repetition. With the ideas that I have for Project 3, I think I will need to focus on those the most.

1. Before coming to class I knew that things mostly need to be symmetrical and colors need to compliment each other.

Coming into today, I didn't know that designed mattered when it came to academic writing and presentations. I just thought you could throw some pretty colors here and there and make it seem like you put some effort into it. But that's not the case.

1. I actually am familiar with many aspects of design and design principles because of my artistic history and also as a marketing major I enjoy all the aspects of design and design principles. I was familiar with how to perfect a layout and how to capture an audience with the correct colors, tones, and over all layout.

Prior to class i knew design was largely about pleasing the eye. Making sure everything is easy to follow and connects concepts. The design should make it easier to read not harder. I learned that white space is used to make the text look less cluttered. And there is more than just one single element involved in design. It is made up of font, color, alignment, proximity, and contrast. All the information we discussed today will be useful when preparing our final project. I can use all these concepts to improve my project.

Coming into today I feel that I knew more about design principles than I thought I did. When I am creating things I tend to use most of these design techniques without even thinking twice about it. Today I learned a lot about the proximity of things, that isn't typically something I consider. Most of my texts will be web based so the use of fonts as well alignment is something I need to focus on for my three texts. Properly incorporating all these techniques into my work will make it easier on the reader to follow what it going on.

I didn’t know all the specifics of design, but I did know how to keep my paper neat and orderly. I never really messed with anything and was always told to keep my paper strictly in MLA format. Today I learned that toying with design can actually benefit your paper by exaggerating some points. It allows readers to see more important points in a different context than you just saying “this is important”. This helps draw attention to essential points of your paper. I think using this exercise in project 3 will help me magnify some of my texts by using formatting and color/font. This will make things more simple, and allow the reader to determine what is implied themselves.

1. Coming into today, i did not know much about design elements besides the basics of font usage, color and contrast. I knew that using a font color similar to the background or a color that is too bright can strain the eyes and make it harder for the reader.

I did not know very much about design principles coming into class today, I guess I have never thought in depth about the things that go into making an aesthetically pleasing and effective document. I knew about the things I have seen in textbooks and through basic observations of many PowerPoint presentations regarding headings and color schemes, but still, I have never thought in depth about it. I did not learn so much as I had things pointed out to me that I kind of already knew. Such as font, I know you do not use Comic Sans for a professional document, but I never thought about it in specific terms, such as advertisements and invitations. It makes sense though, the swirly script on wedding invites and the bubbly type on children’s birthday invitations are there for a reason. Color schemes will help me design some of my documents for project 3, and I am going to pay attention to font in order to try and make the most effective document possible.

Before coming into this class I knew about the basics of design. I knew the general principles of color and font. I did not know much about alignment and knew nothing about repetition or proximity. When I read about repetition I assumed it was the over use of words or phrases, basically I thought it was the act of repeating something that did not need to be repeated. I now know that repetition is actually the way something is formatted, making sure everything is consistent. I also had no idea what proximity was until we did this project. I learned that it is the idea of having similar or related subjects grouped together, making something easier to read and understand. Using this new found knowledge I can be sure to make three good projects using the different types of design principles. I can use a certain font choice for the different projects I make that are most appropriate for the subject. I can make sure that everything is aligned correctly so that I do not make something that looks off center or messy. It will also be good to put repetition into my project, making sure that everything is coherent and consistent.

Before class today, I knew the basics about design principles. I obviously knew what font, color, alignment, and repetition meant. But proximity and contrast gave me a little more trouble. All of the design principles involve creating something that is appealing to the eye as possible. Something that's eye grabbing, symmetric, and organized. I think these are important concepts to know for this project because it will make it easier, give me a better grade, and be an overall better project. There's a lot more to writing than just the words.

Before coming into class today, when it comes to design, I knew that alignment is very important. There always needs to be an "invisible line" that you can see in your design that aligns everything on the page. Today I learned exactly what repetition is and how proximity works on a page. Repetition is being consistent in your design and making it flow and pleasing to the eye. The three texts that I will be making for Project 3 will use proximity and alignment correctly. I also plan to use colors that will look good together and a font that is pleasing to the eye.

1. I didn't know too much about design before I came into class today. From being a teenager who uses the internet frequently there are some things I know about web design that are just from my worldly experience of using the internet multiple times a day. Meaning I am familiar with what looks good, bad, effective, awkward and more. But, before today I probably wouldn't have been able to put into words what each aspect of web design meant, and how it is supposed to be effectively used.

Coming into class today I knew the general information and description of design and design principles. For example, I knew that colors should be subtle, opposed to bright and in your face and that all the text on a page should be the same alignment. Before today, I had never thought about repetition as a tool for uniformity. I had always considered it, solely, trying not to be repetitive in a paper with words, but I learned it is also useful in design. How it is used when you create a slide with uniform colors and fonts. For project three I will pay more attention to the subtle alignment details, such as, margins and also pay attention to repetition.

Coming into class today I knew the most important part of design was that everything should look visually appealing and be uniform. Basically allowing everyone to enjoy looking at your design piece, and it being easy to follow. In class today I learned a lot about the types of fonts you should stay away from or generally use in certain situations. I also learned how colors could have a big impact on the ability to read and follow a design. My group did repetition so it was fun to create really bad examples of repetition, but it allowed me to realize how important repetition is when creating your design. I will definitely be able to apply all I learned about the design principles in my three texts by overall making everything flow and easy to follow and visually appealing to the audience.

Coming into class today, I was unsure of everything that design entailed. I knew most of the principles included in design but not what it was entirely in and off itself. Today I learned a lot about my group's topic which was contrast. I already knew a good amount on color, font, and repetition. Contrast, proximity, and alignment were newer elements for me however. I did not realize how important the contrasts between colors and fonts could be when it came to design. Proximity and alignment were also important elements that I did not really consider before. All of these elements will be very beneficial to focus on for my Project 3. I will be sure to use a good contrast that does not make my media bland or distract my audience from my writing. I will also be sure to make sure my media is not difficult to follow with others' eyes by using the right alignment, proximity, and fonts.

Many of the elements we talked about today in class were already familiar to me. Coming from a family of architects and designers I have been handling these concepts since a young age to make my projects visually appealing and easy to understand (organization, clarity, cohesion). I definitely knew about font and the importance of selecting the correct type or size depending the context and genre. Color and contrast are one of the basics, because when you are younger you may prefer bright, fun colors for your fonts and backgrounds but when you get older you understand the important of the correct tones and contrasts to facilitate your reader’s understanding. Alignment, however it’s one I learned later. Based on the activity today, I learned about repetition, because although it is something I always use, I had not thought of it as a design principle. It is very helpful if some patterns repeat and are kept constant consistently because that way the reader can find the information better. For example, textbooks use this strategy with the titles and subsections, making it easier to navigate through the content. From today’s exercise, I will apply everything. These design principles are foundational for a reason. I will use them so my texts for Project 3 are easy to follow and visually pleasant.

When coming into class today I didn’t know that much about what design principles were exactly. All I really knew was that it was a way that your papers should look or have an ideal look or format. After doing todays exercise in class I learned a lot more what they were as well I got a better understanding of them. For example, my group was given proximity at first I wasn’t really too sure on what he meant by that but after reading the definition and asking for help I got a true understanding of it. I learned that the spacing of sentences and what belongs together and what doesn’t are examples of what proximity is. As well I learned that in order to have the correct layout you will need all of the design principles we learned today in class. From today’s class I am able I think to use my own example if I decided to do a brochure using proximity because I learned what should be together and what shouldn’t be.

Before reading, I always thought about design for mainly advertisements, art, and computer programs, but never really thought of it as something I could incorporate into my papers.

Coming into class, I knew the basics- pretty much just make the design look aesthetically pleasing and organized such as using proper alignment and nice, clear colors like we spoke about in class. I definitely learned a lot more about design principles through the activity though, such as repetition and how important it is to use the same colors, or fonts. For project 3, I definitely need to apply all of the topics we spoke in class about such as choosing easy to read fonts, and colors while also keeping it organized by using the correct alignment and proximity; making my project easy to grasp and pleasant to the eye.

My topic is the effects of social media and technology. In my paper I focused on the age groups of children, teenagers, and young adults with a lot of emphasis on college students. The first five audience I started out with during this exercise were college students, educators, parents, younger children, and females. By the end of the exercise, I starred college students, females, advertising companies, parents, and young children. I starred these particular audiences because I believe I can find a way to tie my project into each of these groups. For college students, I plan to advertise the dangers of multitasking while studying and how their grades will be affected. I can attract the audience of educators by showing the positive effect of incorporating technology into classroom curriculum. I can attract females by creating a positive body image advertisement. I can appeal to advertising companies by showing the dangers unrealistic female body portrayals create in young women, and I can attract the audience of young children by demonstrating how a world consumed by technology and social media can impact them in their years ahead in life. I think I have a pretty good handle on this project and how I want to proceed in completing it. I want to mainly focus on different audiences involving education because the bulk of my paper and research focused on the effects technology and social media had on education.

Coming into class, I really did knew little to nothing on design principles it very far out of the realm of what I usually pay attention to. I always have been interested though, and do find it fascinating to learn about. I did know the tediousness that is associated with design as well as the attention to detail and precision. I also know that there is a multitude of design principles out there.
